Safe Standing - Support the Early Day motion

Definitely.

One of the things that grates on me is that many members of the Hilsborough families have spent 30 years trying to prove that, and yet oppose standing because they claim it is unsafe. I don't say this lightly but it's for me it's a hypocritical stance to take. Heaven forbid anyone with any sort of authority say that in public though, I can only imagine that would go down like a sack of shit tied to an anvil.

Yeah, a lot of people have let their heart rule their heads and now for some reason the Hillsborough families are the definitive authority on whether or not standing at football is safe or not.

I reckon the wider public, not just those with the loudest voices, don't want you trying to flog a league game, or an extra game, around the world for a few quid, taking away home advantage and the traditions of attending league matches in the club's own stadium but you still bang on about it every couple of years.

So, Mr Scudamore, what you want and what others want often differ quite substantially. Far more fan groups want this than your own suggestions of "growing the brand" or similar corporate bollocks. Will the wider public be considered over taking matches around the world?

Multiple +s for that.

SGSA Approval Received -- Crowdfunding Campaign to Begin on 2nd August

Following months of hard work and consultation with a number of football governing bodies, the Supporters Parliament in conjunction with Shrewsbury Town Football Club has great pleasure in announcing that the club is now in a position to formally apply for changes to its Safety Certificate in respect of bringing a "Safe Standing" area to the Montgomery Waters Meadow stadium.

This means we are a big step closer to our dream of becoming the first English Football League club to have a safe standing area with rail seats installed in a (currently) all-seater stadium. The application has been approved by the Sports Ground Safety Authority (SGSA) and the football club have now received written confirmation of the approval.

Many football fans across the UK and Europe will already be aware of how popular and successful rail seating has become amongst supporters and how having a safe standing area can increase the atmosphere inside stadiums. Many clubs across Germany have rail seats, for example Borussia Dortmund whose fans form a "Yellow Wall" during games, while closer to home Celtic FC installed 3,000 seats before the 16/17 season - a major success for the club. Over the recent weeks, we have received huge support for what we are trying to achieve for Shrewsbury Town, including from our local MP Daniel Kawczynski who has written to us to give us his backing from Westminster.

Being a supporter-led project also means that the cost of installing the rail seating will be fully funded by the supporters of Shrewsbury Town, assisted, we hope, by supporters of safe standing from all over the country. To help us achieve this funding we have acquired the services and expertise of Tifosy, the global leaders in sports crowdfunding. By pledging your support to the campaign you will have an opportunity to secure one of a range of exclusive rewards, some of which will be specifically designed for Shrews fans, while some will appeal to fans across the UK and hopefully beyond.

The campaign will launch officially on Wednesday 2nd August. Before we launch on a national level we will hold an exclusive launch night on 1st August at the Montgomery Waters Meadow Stadium, tickets for which will be available on a first come, first served basis. The launch night will give everyone who attends the opportunity to hear from those people involved in the project: Roger Groves and Mike Davis from the SP, Brian Caldwell, CEO of Shrewsbury Town, Jon Darch from the Safe Standing Roadshow and James Pollock from Tifosy.

This really is an exciting project, not just for our football club but for our supporters too. The publicity we have received so far has gone beyond our wildest dreams so we urge every supporter of our football club to get behind us, back us by pledging some money and play your part in helping Shrewsbury Town become the first club to introduce Safe Standing in the EFL.

If you are interested in coming to the launch event, please email your name to [email protected]. Please also visit www.tifosy.com/shrews to register your email address to receive the launch announcement.

18k responded to the Liverpool supporters' consultation. Conclusive result, great turnout and significant in terms of the effect grassroots organisations can have on the campaign given the club they represent.

Following Spirit of Shankly’s consultations and discussions on rail seating, members and supporters have been voting for the past week. They were asked whether they are in favour, against or undecided on the introduction of rail-seating areas in football grounds.

17,910 supporters took part in the vote. Voting was open 22 – 28 July.

On the introduction of rail seating areas in football stadiums, are you?

In favour: 88.21%

Against: 5.04%

Don’t know enough / want to know more: 4.8%

Undecided: 1.96%

Voting among Spirit of Shankly members was broadly similar:

In favour: 88.8%

Against: 4.6%

Don’t know enough / want to know more: 2.9%

Undecided: 3.8%

As a result, Spirit of Shankly’s policy and position is in favour of the introduction of rail-seating areas.

What the result means

Almost 18,000 supporters – an unprecedented number in football supporter surveys of this type – took part in our dialogue and gave their views on rail seating. Spirit Of Shankly would like to thank all those who participated so that supporters could make an informed decision.

We would like to thank in particular the Hillsborough Family Support Group, Hillsborough Justice Campaign, and all the survivors and families of those at Hillsborough. Many shared personal experiences, something a number of them have done rarely since 1989. We are humbled that they felt able to do so with us, and we thank them sincerely for informing this debate. We do and always will retain the utmost respect for their views.

Spirit of Shankly’s future policy and position follows a sensitive, sensible, honest and mature conversation, throughout which key themes emerged: a choice for supporters between sitting and standing; safety for those who currently stand at games; and the safety of any future standing model. Contributions from our panel, including representatives from the Sports Ground Safety Authority and Celtic FC, expertly addressed these matters.

Such a turnout and overwhelming majority in favour of rail seating cannot be ignored. It was always our intention to ensure all supporters had an opportunity to contribute, listen to differing views and then decide. This has now happened.

We realise the significance of this vote both locally and in the wider debate nationally. From when discussions of rail seating first began, Liverpool supporters and Hillsborough have been referenced both as a reason not to do it, or as a possible turning point that would allow its introduction.

Now, our views are known and we urge everyone to digest and understand the sensitivities and detail behind the outcome.

Our voice and views should not be misused, misrepresented or misappropriated by anyone. We will not allow that.

No one has ‘won’. There are no winners or losers. There may be disagreement with views on either side, but we gave everyone an opportunity to have their say and ask their questions. To those who cannot understand this, we urge them to consider the experiences and heartache that many have felt and experienced during this time.

We would encourage those campaigning for the introduction of rail-seating areas to ensure that all views are heard and to ensure the questions and concerns of those opposed are addressed. To this end we offer an open invitation for any campaign or group to engage with us regarding these results so that they are interpreted in a full and proper manner.

We emphasise that this remains the first step for Liverpool supporters, not the conclusion. The outcome of this is not a call for rail seating to be introduced at Anfield. We will have further consultation with families, survivors, members, supporters and LFC in due course but for now, we will take time to digest the result and reflect on what it means.

Spurs trialing safe standing in new stadium for when future laws allow it

Tottenham Hotspur are building their new ground with that future law change in mind. A photo of safe standing terrace equipment installed at the new Spurs stadium was photographed and posted on Twitter yesterday, leading some to speculate that Spurs would be willing to consider standing terraces should the law allow it.

That will be interesting when the rows of seats just in front of the rails inevitably stand up. Zero tolerance in those areas? Or let them carry on regardless? The first seems difficult to inforce but the second kind of defeats the point of them being installed in the first place.

Install more because it's clearly popular.

So, this question has probably been asked before and yes I have just read the post regarding cost of rail seating.

Anyway to my point. Why havent lower league clubs who have standing stadiums converted to safe standing to try and push it through abit more?

Yes good point, why don't all lower league teams with no money spend £1m on rail seating they don't need?

Norwich fans being threatened for standing.

Maybe if they had a dedicated area to stand in, everyone would be happy and no-one would be complaining. Novel thought I know!

That threat is so 2009.

Good to see their supporters' club spokesman sticking up for safe standing though, it'd be Big Cliff telling us rules are rules and we should be happy to pay £40 a ticket if it happened here.

I feel like in the next 2 or 3 years the motion of safe standing will move fairly quickly. It is obvious demand is everywhere and articles like the Norwich one just highlight this even further to the government. I know it's not the biggest problem on the governments agenda but I think it will be addressed very soon.

Let's hope my feelings are right.
