What sort of a day must you have had to turn up outside a bar at 1.30 am in a van with some mates and start giving everyone grief?

Found this really sad:

For a country so rich in raw materials and a willing labour force it is amazing what a mess things are. We are so lucky to have been born in the West and have a great welfare protecting net. These people don't deserve to be starving.

What a bizarre story. A cynic might suggest she's made it all up. Whatever the truth, it's bonkers.

I've read stuff before about people being caught up in other folks' fantasies (and it's usually women being taken in by weird blokes) but I've never known of something on this scale

I bet it was sending him nuts...

Must have had a screw loose. He should get into vice. Either that or have a bit on the side and get lathed or drilled, as he prefers.

News Corp has indicated it expects to write down its investment in Foxtel by up to a billion US dollars, as the company concludes a deal with Telstra that will see the pay TV operator merge with Fox Sports Australia.

In a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission this morning, News Corporation said it expects to record between US$700 million and US$1 billion in write downs related to the combined business ahead of the deal, which is expected to be finalised by the middle of the year.

CHENGDU, Sichuan: A married couple in China recently found out that they had unknowingly crossed paths nearly 20 years ago, thanks to an old photograph stashed away in a family album.

Mr Ye and his wife, Ms Xue, met and fell in love in 2011 in Chengdu, and have twin daughters - but the two unknowingly crossed paths in July 2000, when they visited the May Fourth Square in the seaside city of Qingdao at the same exact moment, Sina News reported.

Mr Ye made the discovery on Mar 4 while he was going through his wife's photos from her younger days at his mother-in-law's place to compare who their daughters resembled more.

There was a similar story here about 20 years ago. Somebody's holidays from when they were kids had their future wife in them. I find co incidences like this fascinating.

Poundworld fined £1.2 million for mouse infestation!

Fairly extraordinary amount for a company to be fined

They resealed packets of food that had been opened by rodents and put them b.ack on the shelves.

Seems entirely reasonable to me

It's a huge fine, trust me.

I didn't say it was unreasonable, it's just that compared to a lot of similar cases it's a lot.

I agree.

Reading further, it seems the judgement was made by referencing the overall worth of the company, which was £50+ billion. So a drop in the ocean, really.

New sentencing council guidelines came out Feb 2016, basing fines on size of company and turnover.

I do quite a bit of work in this area and its one of the first big cases that I've come across where it's obviously been implemented.

That's interesting - I didn't know that. Thanks.

I guess that explains it then.

Weird place, Japan. Is that a consequence of their insular, nationalist worldview? What do brexiters who view Japan as a positive example of a nationalist country think to the apparent normalisation of paedophilia in the country?
