Manager Profile

Taylor will be remembered by most Leicester fans as one of the worst managers in the club's history, largely due to splashing big amounts of cash on players that simply couldn't cut it at Premier League level. He took charge of the club from 2000-01 after cutting his managerial teeth with Dartford, Southend United, Dover Athletic, Gillingham and even the England U21s, where he really made a name for himself with some good results.

He was given more money to spend than any other manager in the clubs history, but spending it on players such as Ade Akinbiyi, for £5 million, didn't do him any favours with the City faithful. He also brought in Junior Lewis on high wages, a player that followed Taylor around at other clubs before and after his stint in Leicestershire.

Most fans believed that Taylor quickly ruined almost everything Martin O'Neill, the previous manager, had successfully created within a year of him taking charge. That said, Taylor actually had a great start as City boss and had Leicester top of the Premiership after eight games. They stayed top for two weeks, with Taylor being awarded the Premier League Manager of the Month award for September 2000 and City remained in the hunt for a european place until the latter stages of the season. A shock 2-1 home defeat against lowly Wycombe Wanderers in the FA Cup proved to be the catalyst for a poor end to the season. Nine defeats in City's last ten games saw them sucked down to 13th place in the table.

The momentum of poor form continued into the start of the 2001-02 season, with Leicester losing 5-0 to newly-promoted Bolton Wanderers at home on the opening day. Things didn't get better and Taylor was soon sacked at the end of September.

During his stint with Leicester he was in fact given the role of England manager for one match only, as caretaker boss. It came against Italy away in November 2000 and Taylor looked to blood young players in the game, as well as being remembered for handing David Beckham the captain's armband for his country for the very first time.

After being sacked from his position with City he went on to take charge of Brighton within two weeks, where previous boss Micky Adams had moved in the other direction to be assistant manager to Dave Bassett at Leicester. He guided Brighton to the Division Two championship but resigned at the end of the season due to his frustration with the club's lack of financial resources. Moves to Hull City, a second spell with England U21s, Crystal Palace, Stevenage Borough, Wycombe Wanderers and Bradford City followed before the Bahrain national team took his services on in July 2011.
