The Glasgow-born wing-back was brought to City by Micky Adams in the January transfer window of 2004 after starting his career at Kilmarnock.

An unfortunate shoulder injury in his first reserve outing for Leicester stemmed his City start but, despite making only five substitute appearances in the Premier League, he won a call-up for the Scotland squad.

His progress with City was thwarted by injuries and then he seemingly didn't get a look-in when Craig Levein took control following Adams's departure.

In total Canero played just 13 times for City, eight starts and five from the bench and he opted for a return back north of the border with Dundee United in September 2005 after the cancellation of his City contract with agreed. He was tempted to finish his career in the MLS with New Jersey MetroStars, the team later to be renamed New York Red Bulls.
