A tall, strong and powerful centre-back, Morgan rose through the youth ranks at Nottingham's two professional clubs County and Forest before eventually making his name with the latter.

Morgan was eventually rejected by County and it's understood he contemplated quitting the game, but Forest gave him a second chance and he gladly took it with both hands. After gaining some valuable experience on-loan at Kidderminster Harriers he was thrown in to the Forest first team, being helped into things by former England player Des Walker in his latter years as a player.

He soon became a regular in Forest's defence and helped the Reds to promotion in the 2007-08 campaign. His 400th appearance for Forest, in October 2011, saw him also handed the captaincy and he left Forest as their longest-serving player at the time.

City actually had an initial bid turned down for his services but the Foxes soon got their man for a fee thought to be around the £1 million mark, although it remained undisclosed by both clubs. He was one of Nigel Pearson's first signings when he returned to the club to succeed the sacked Sven-Goran Eriksson as Pearson aimed to bolster a leaking defence.

His performances in the latter half of that 2011-12 season were enough to impress Pearson, who handed the captain's armband to the defender before the start of the 2012-13 campaign - his first full season at the King Power Stadium.
