The powerful target man arrived at City from rivals Derby County, in what many people believed to be his 'twlight years', but he enjoyed a productive spell at the Walkers Stadium, not least in forming a formidable partnership with Matty Fryatt in City's promotion season from League One. He signed in January 2008 with the task of keeping City in the Championship, but they suffered relegation despite Howard netting a hat-trick in an impressive 4-1 win at West Brom.
Eager to bounce back, he and Fryatt ripped League One defences to bits the following season and he helped the club back to the Championship, scoring 13 league goals and contributing numerous assists. He was awarded the supporters' club Player of the Season that year.
He scored just 5 the next season but his strength and powerful presence for City helped them to the Championship play-offs. He penned a contract extension in October 2010 but fell down the peking order following Sven-Goran Eriksson's arrival at the club. Howard was also identified as a player who could play for Scotland, despite being born in Durham, and he scored in his debut for Scotland B against their Republic of Ireland counterparts.
