Schmeichel is a Danish goalkeeper who is the son of Manchester United's famous shot-stopper Peter Schmeichel. Smaller in build than his father, Kasper still has many of his father's goalkeeping abilities, including some superb shot-stopping and the ability to come racing from his line and spread himself to make life difficult for attackers. He also shares his father's constant shouting and organisation of the defenders in front of him.

Born in Copenhagen, Kasper was only ever going to be a goalkeeper, following in his father's footsteps, and he joined the youth set-up at Manchester City, when his dad had moved on to the blue side of Manchester in the twilight years of his career. He made just eight league appearances for City and had numerous loan spells away from the club to get first-team football. Eventually he made a permanent switch to Notts County, where he worked under Sven-Goran Eriksson, his former boss at City. Leeds United took a chance of Schmeichel before Sven linked up with the stopper for a third time when he took charge at Leicester, signing him on a three-year deal in June 2011.

It was a baptism of fire for the Dane, who played his first game in goal for the Foxes in a pre-season friendly against Real Madrid, which finished 2-1 to the Spanish giants. Schmeichel quickly endeared himself to the City faithful though thanks to his abilities and determined approach to the game. He was undoubtedly City's number one during his first year at the club but his temper did get the better of him in an away game at Nottingham Forest when he was shown a red card for two needless bookable offences.

Schmeichel has represented Denmark at U19, U20 and U21 level and was called-up to the senior side for the first time in the summer of 2011 but was an unused substitute.
