Corby-born Campbell came through the youth ranks at City and featured in the Premier League before moving on, via a loan spell with Birmingham City, to Grimsby Town and Bristol Rovers in the lower leagues.

His City debut came in 1996 and he was dubbed as City's 'Young Player of the Year' for the 1996-97 season, a year which saw him make an encouraging debut against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

His form saw him called-up by Scotland Under-21s in March 1998 and although he had neat passing, Campbell's weak play in midfield often saw him as nothing more than a squad player with Leicester, something mirrored in his appearances. He made 12 Premier League starts and 25 substitute appearances, without scoring a goal.

He also appeared as a substitute in the UEFA Cup campaign for City. But his 'fringe player' status saw him loaned out to Birmingham and then Grimsby, where he impressed to secure a permanent deal. He went on to captain Bristol Rovers.
