The battling midfielder had two spells with City during the late 1970s and early 80s, inspiring the Foxes to promotion under Jock Wallace in his first stint before returning to add some experience to City’s Second Division side after the club failed to extend his first stint in the Midlands.
The Glaswegian was signed by Frank McLintock, a former teammate during their playing days together at Arsenal and he arrived with high expectations thanks to his Fairs Cup success with the Gooners in 1970.
Kelly’s debut came in August 1977 at Manchester City and he initially struggled along with the rest of his teammates as City suffered relegation the same season. He hit back the following campaign, however, his good midfield engine becoming a key cog as Leicester bounced back at the second time of asking.
His good form was such that it was surprising for City not to renew his deal when it expired, instead Kelly moved to Notts County for a year and then Bournemouth before Wallace signed the Scot again in December 1981.
Moves to Kettering Town, Melton Town and Torquay United followed before Kelly finished his playing career with Saltash United.
