Grew was a goalkeeper who couldn't get a run of games together at West Brom, the club where he turned professional. He played just 33 games over an eight-year stint there and was usually out on-loan than at the Hawthorns, namely at clubs including Wigan Athletic and Notts County.
City took their chance to sign him permanently as they eagerly sought a goalkeeper who could plug the gap left by Mark Wallington, who was having contract problems at the time. He featured as the club's number one while Wallington returned to the fold but, after five defeats on the spin, Grew was soon on the sidelines when the Foxes' regular number one returned.
Grew still couldn't find the first-team football he desired at Ipswich Town and again spent a number of loan spells away from Portman Road, strangely going back to West Brom for a spell. He did enjoy better fortunes at Port Vale, even though his time there did start with a bad injury, featuring in Vale's Division Three promotion season.
He was loaned to Blackburn Rovers in 1990 and went on to play for Cardiff City and Stafford Rangers before finishing his playing days at Hednesford Town.
