Player Profile

The Durham-born left-half saw his career somewhat thwarted through serving in the Royal Navy during the war. He turned pro' with Derby County but then guested for clubs including Southampton and Coventry City during wartime. He also helped Derby to an FA Cup final in 1946 before moving on to sign for City.

He was a regular for the Foxes in the first post-war football season and arrived at the club as part of a two-man package - Dave McCulloch was also brought to City at the same time.

He eventually lost his starting place to Johnny King and was part of the now-famous five-man exodus to Watford. It was there he stayed, settling to make 177 appearances for the club in Division Three (South) before bringing his career to a close.

He stayed in the game and coached at Brentford, Watford, Sheffield Wednesday and Everton before embarking on a managerial career with Mansfield Town and Greek clubs Ethnikos and Panahaiki and a physio career with Plymouth Argyle and Ipswich Town before retiring in Yorkshire.
