Drivers are being warned of road closures and parking restrictions along Western Road in Leicester's West End from this weekend as a major project begins. The project is set to cost around £700,000 and will focus on pavements and drains in the area.

The warning has been issued ahead of the works beginning on Sunday (November 3). The project will also see the residential street near Bede Park resurfaced, with the scheme set to take months to complete. The city council said footpaths will be improved, dropped kerbs removed and the road surface will also be improved.

Changes will also be made to the crossroads at the junction of Western Road and Briton Street to give priority to vehicles and bicycles on Briton Street. Resurfacing of the main carriageway on Western Road, between its junctions with Braunstone Gate and Briton Street, will be carried out in spring 2025.

Parking restrictions and rolling road closures will be required throughout the works, with signposted diversions in place. Access to all houses, shops and businesses will be maintained and the work will be suspended during the Christmas period with full access reinstated.

Geoff Whittle, assistant city mayor for environment and transport, said: “The city’s road network needs regular maintenance and repairs to ensure it can cope with modern demands. These latest works will see major maintenance and improvements made to a busy residential street and important local route, which will benefit of everyone who uses it.

“For that work to take place, parts of the road will need to be closed temporarily but diversions will be clearly signposted and disruption will be kept to a minimum wherever possible.”

The £700,000 scheme will be funded as part of the Connecting Leicester programme which is supported by the Department for Transport’s Transforming Cities Fund. The initial work is expected to be completed by late January 2025, and will be carried out in phases on short sections of the road to help minimise disruption
