SUE TOWNSEND

The programme toured some of Leicester's less scenic council estates, which have served as an inspiration for some of her novels.

Not a great fan of Adrian Mole (some of his mannerisms are frighteningly close to home :blush::blush: ), but "The Queen and I" was a classic read.

The programme told of how she is virtually blind through diabetes and instead of writing/typing books in the usual way, has to dictate the words to her husband and then edit them verbally afterwards. That must be a gruesomely slow process!

But she came across as a witty and intelligent writer who was praised by John Mortimer and Ian Hislop among others.

She is also under consideration for freedom of the city of Leicester, an honour no more than she deserves as one of the best literary talents ever to have come out of England, not just Leicester.
