JoeyB Posted 20 February 2007 Posted 20 February 2007 Well just thinking about it and listening to Andy Murray on the radio now i thought that: when he's doing well he's British but when he's doing bad he's Scottish, like a few other tennis players. is it just me or do other people see/here that too?
Geo V Posted 21 February 2007 Posted 21 February 2007 Well just thinking about it and listening to Andy Murray on the radio now i thought that: when he's doing well he's British but when he's doing bad he's Scottish, like a few other tennis players. is it just me or do other people see/here that too? Scottish people dislike English people when it comes to sport. We have heard about Scottish politicians saying that they want England to lose in sports, especially football and Murray is the same. Last year he said he would be suporting all teams aprt from England in the World Cup! He also made a point of wearing Scottish tenniswear and sweatbands to show how Scottish he is. You get the feeling that he isnt into this Tim Henman and greg Rusedski "we must win at Wimbledon" crap that comes out every year. I think that Britain comes together well in Athletics though as you hardly hear of Scots saying they did it for Scotland or English people saying they did it for England. Its arguably one of the only times that they are all pulling for the same team. Back to Murray, he should be classed as British because Internationally in comps like the Davis cup there is a British team and not English and Scottish. If we had a British football team the same could be said of them but we havent!! BTW Andy Murrays brother won teh doubles with someother too the other day so the future is bright in tennis terms in that household, British or not!
Darth Fox Posted 21 February 2007 Posted 21 February 2007 What p!sses us Scots off is that as you say when a Scot does well he's British(English) but when he does badly he's Scottish. It's similar to when England fans riot abroad and all of a sudden they are British fans in otherwords lumping the rest of the UK footie fans in with the badly behaved English fans. So to sum it up if England do well then "England" are doing well but if they do badly they are British but on the other hand if Scotland etc do well they are no longer Scottish etc they become part of the UK. It's Englands way of stealing a wee bit fo glory from someone else. Helps you sleep at night.
Zingari Posted 21 February 2007 Posted 21 February 2007 like gordon brown ( and loads of other mps) are scottish and have their own parliament ; but they still want to come to ours and be british
Darth Fox Posted 21 February 2007 Posted 21 February 2007 like gordon brown ( and loads of other mps) are scottish and have their own parliament ; but they still want to come to ours and be british Gordon Brown is about as Scottish as Alan Hansen...nuff said!
Geo V Posted 21 February 2007 Posted 21 February 2007 Gordon Brown is about as Scottish as Alan Hansen...nuff said! It did crack me up when Hansen said "We" when reffering to England during the world cup before lIneker picked him up on it! I think he is still bitter because he didnt play as many games for Scotland as his talents deserved.
