'Nemo' warden guilty over death

David Stoll has 20 years' experience with Derbyshire Police

A policeman who was watching the Disney film Finding Nemo while a prisoner hanged himself has been found guilty of misconduct in a public office.

David Stoll, 49, was the warden in the custody suite at St Mary's Wharf police station, Derby, on the night Craig Boyd hanged himself in a cell.

Mr Boyd was found dead in the early hours of 16 March 2004.

A jury at Nottingham Crown Court deliberated for almost three hours before returning a guilty verdict.

Stoll had told Nottingham Crown Court he thought a colleague had visited cells and so signed forms in his own name, giving the impression he had checked on the inmate.

Stoll admitted lying to his supervisor about who had carried out the checks because he said he wanted to impress him.

He will be sentenced on Friday.

Two other officers, Sgt Nigel Rogers, 42, and Sgt Christopher Linscott, 43, were acquitted of the same charge on Monday.
