Away Matches

Having been to all league away games so far, it is starting to get a bit predictable as to what happens. The home side who generally think they are going to have an easy time against a newly promoted team come out a bit complacent, City take advantage by way of possession, slick football and creating chances but fail to put them away.

Half-time sees the home side given a bollocking and second half sees them transformed, City either left hanging on (Ipswich/Sheff Utd) or defeated and dominated as was the case last night.

I'm not knocking our overall performances as I've been very pleased with our start to the season but every one of these games could have had a different outcome had we taken even a reasonable percentage of the chances we've had in the first half. What worries me is sooner or later, teams are going to clock on that we are a half decent side and come out of the blocks strongly themselves.

If we are seriously going to push to be a top 6 side, this is a problem that needs addressing. Are the strikers the problem or is it the mentality?

I wouldn't even generalise this purely to away matches either. I'm not sure whether it's been pointed out already yet, but we've not scored in the first half of a match once this season in the league. I do agree with you though, despite the very pleasing start we could have had so much more.

We're not going to be a top six side come May, pruely because our team doesn't possess enough quality for it. Whilst some of our players show flashes of brilliance at times, when it comes to having that quality in the final third they falter. Take N'Guessan last night for example. When he did beat Enrique on the right last night, the final ball was woeful.

Again, with Fryatt. I'm fairly sure we would have scored if he'd have passed it instead of trying to go himself as per usual. Just little decisions like this can change the dynamics of the game immensely.

It's really hard to say what we should be targetting this season I think. Obviously every club thinks a top six place is a realistic aim, but I think we will fall short of that. Comfortable mid-table, ready to push on next year would be good. Can you imagine our current crop in the Premier League next year?! It would be horrific!
