Shahriar Nafees made his first fifty in international cricket as Bangladesh posted a commendable 250-8 against Australia at Canterbury.

The 19-year-old rescued his side from 19-3 and made 75 before he was caught behind off Shane Watson, one of five victims for keeper Adam Gilchrist.

The late impetus was provided by Khaled Mashud, who hit 71 not out and shared a stand of 57 with Khaled Mahmud (22).

Brett Lee took two early wickets but conceded 62 from his 10 overs.

And Australia will also be concerned about the raggedness of some of their fielding as the Bangladesh innings reached its climax.

The Tigers caused one of the greatest shocks in cricket history when they defeated Australia in Cardiff two weekends ago, but went into the match having suffered three heavy defeats since then.

Ricky Ponting chose to put them in after winning the toss and the first wicket soon arrived when Javed Omar was tempted by a Jason Gillespie outswinger and caught by Gilchrist for nought, having already been dropped at slip by Matthew Hayden.

Lee bowled Tushar Imran first ball and then sent Mohammad Ashraful's stumps cartwheeling in the seventh over in response to the youngster hooking him for six.

Habibul Bashar collected five boundaries in a quickfire 30 before he gloving a rising delivery from Watson, and he was soon followed back to the dressing room by Aftab Ahmed, who made only seven before Michael Kasprowicz found the edge.

Nafees kept his head, however, and brought up his fifty from 82 balls as he and Mashud added 94 in 20 overs for the sixth wicket.

Once he had departed, Mohammad Rafique hit a six in making 15 off 13 balls and Mahmud also produced some enterprising shots before holing out to Ponting at mid-on from the final ball of the innings.

The Aussies are currently 16 for 1 from 3.0 overs.
