Clive Redman Posted 20 April 2012 Posted 20 April 2012 After more than 30 years spent reporting on regional newspapers across the Midlands, including many seasons covering football, Steve Pumfrey recently left his role on the Leicester Mercury’s sports desk. Steve talks about his memories of covering Leicester City... "My favourite game was April 8th 2009 when City clinched the League One title with a 2-0 win at Southend United. 2000 Foxes fans converged on the seaside town and there were parties all weekend. At our hotel there was a barbecue on the beach until the early hours of the Sunday morning. It was a good weekend and everybody enjoyed themselves. “My favourite goal comes from that season as well. I think, just due to the drama at the time, it was Max Gradel’s injury time free-kick away at MK Dons. A lot of the City fans were leaving the ground and then rushed back up the stairs to see the ball fly straight into the top corner. City were 12 points ahead at the top of the table but that goal really dealt MK Dons a massive blow as they went on to miss out on automatic promotion and promotion via the play-offs. It was a real turning point in Leicester’s season and that’s when you knew they were going to win the league.” For more see... http://www.soarmagazine.co.uk/2012/04/19/steve-pumfrey-a-career-in-print-part-1/
Clive Redman Posted 20 April 2012 Author Posted 20 April 2012 Part of the Steve Pumfrey interview... “I did a series of features on Jimmy Nielsen, the Leicester City goalkeeper, who was dubbed the ‘new Peter Schmeichel’ when Martin Allen signed him in 2007. I’d had a tip-off from a Swedish journalist that Jimmy had some major gambling problems, and his nickname was actually ‘Casino Jimmy’. I met him and did a two-night feature in the Mercury. He’d lost a significant amount of money; I think it ran into millions. The headline was something like ‘I blew £2million on poker’. So that was a news story and different to all of the day-to-day stuff which made it quite exciting. Finding out a little bit more about somebody’s life is interesting as a journalist. Thankfully Jimmy cured his addiction and he’s still playing regularly in the MLS in America.” For more see... http://www.soarmagazine.co.uk/2012/04/20/steve-pumfrey-a-career-in-print-part-2/
