Jonbluefox9 Posted 6 December 2005 Posted 6 December 2005 I recently got a new computer and I've tried to install two things from discs that have both produced an 'invalid drive error' message. It keeps on mentioning a drive called the Z drive which I'd never heard of before on my old computer. It may be important to take into account that it wasn't a brand new computer when I got it but newer than my other one was. Can anyone help me out?

Some more info would be helpful... - what are you trying to install? - from what disc? - what says "invalid drive error"? (is it the installation program) You can PM me if you prefer...

cisono Posted 7 December 2005 Posted 7 December 2005 Don't forget to send me your autoexec.bat file....
cisono Posted 7 December 2005 Posted 7 December 2005 Is it sorted then? working on it... it is a bit slow-going, working remotely like this
cisono Posted 7 December 2005 Posted 7 December 2005 Is it sorted then? So slow going working over IM! So far, we have ascertained that his problem is not the specific software, but Windows 98 thinking SystemDrive is z: (when instead it is supposed to be c:): in fact, no installation goes through because the installers all try to install to the non-existent z: drive. SystemRoot and ProgramFilesDir are set correctly though. We could not find anything in autoexec.bat, win.ini or system.ini to suggest something is changing the SystemDrive. Nothing strange in the startup directory, but have only explored part of the registry for suspicious stuff. A virus scan (with up-to-date definitions) also found no viruses. My current advice is to do a system repair - the fastest way methinks. Just thought I'd give you a summary in case you are around (and I am not) later on ...
