Anti-smoking lobby group ASH said football was all about health and fitness - and Foxes fans should be banned from lighting up. Yesterday, club bosses announced that, from the start of next season, the Walkers Stadium will be a smoke-free zone. Ian Willmore, of ASH, said: "Sports stadiums are supposed to be places of health and physical fitness. "If people are standing next to someone at the stadium who is smoking, it won't do their health any good.." Pro-smoking group Forest described the move as "ludicrous". Spokesman Neil Rafferty said: "The claims made about passive smoking are pretty thin to begin with. To suggest anyone will be in danger in an open stadium is ludicrous. It is just victimising smokers." Fans overwhelmingly voted to ban smoking during a special half-time vote held during this season's home game against Leeds United. Supporters were asked to hold up red cards if they wanted a ban. Yesterday, the board of directors agreed and voted to make the Walkers Stadium a smoke-free zone. While some fans were happy with the move, others said they should still have the right to smoke. Businessman Abdur Mehta, 40, of Loughborough, said: "Smoking and Leicester City are two of my greatest pleasures in life. "I like to enjoy them both together. I don't see what the problem is because you are standing outside. "I am not sure the vote they had during the Leeds game was very scientific. "Lots of the fans had made their red cards into paper planes and threw them on to the pitch before they even had the vote. Did all those count as a vote against?" Nev Turner, 70, from Braunstone, said: "I think banning smoking is a good thing. It is hard to enjoy your half-time sandwich if there is someone standing next to you blowing smoke in your face." A club spokesman said the ban was in line with incoming Government legislation to stop smoking in pubs. He said: "It will make the ground a more pleasant environment. "We know not everyone will be in favour of this and we will be making arrangements for fans who smoke." However, all is not lost for smoking Foxes fans. The club is planning to set up fenced-off areas outside the building where fans will be able to smoke. Eddie
Chairman of the Bored Posted 1 June 2006 Posted 1 June 2006 Pro-smoking group Forest described the move as "ludicrous". I can see Calderwood lighting up on the touchline next season. No wonder the Trees are so frigging crap.
