Appliance of science

Leicester City's squad are being put through their paces in a more scientific approach to pre-season by boss Rob Kelly.

Kelly and his coaching staff devised the new training schedule at the end of last season and the squad, who returned to the Loughborough University training pitches on Monday, have been putting it into practice this week.

"We sat down at the end of last season and looked at what type of movements the players make," Kelly explained to the club's official website. "We have now simply replicated those in our training methods. It might look and seem complicated but it isn't. Players quickly learn the routines.

"When you look at the pitch area you may think that it looks more like somewhere for a 747 to land because there are so many cones out there. But the players recognise the value in the routines and have done well.

"Some people will try and make what we are doing seem more complicated and more of a science than it actually is. We work on a common sense approach.

"All of this was put together at the end of last season. We took a long time working out what would be best for the players and putting the schedule together. Hopefully we will see the benefits for all our efforts come August 5."
