MLSZ spokesman Peter Serenyi said late Tuesday that the federation's licensing appellate committee decided by majority vote to ban Ferencvaros from the top flight. He said details of the decision would be made public on Wednesday. The club said it would appeal the decision in Hungarian courts and also to European soccer's governing body, UEFA, but would likely play in the second division this year. "We would like to play in the second division" if Ferencvaros will be banned from the first division, club president Miklos Inancsy said on Wednesday. Ferencvaros has been the only Hungarian club team to have continuously played in the first division since the first championships were held in 1901. The green-and-whites have 28 titles to their name in over the course of more than a century, the first one in 1903 and the latest one in 2004. The club is the most popular in Hungary, supported by many die-hard fans who warned of retaliation against the club management for their failure to straighten the finances of the club. "If this is the end of Fradi (Ferencvaros), it is also the end of you," read one graffiti message on the walls of the the club's stadium in Budapest last night. The members of the appellate committee that revoked Ferencvaros' first division license were not named, reportedly for fear of retaliation by the club's supporters. Seems like the net is being spread ever wider. How many more of Europe's top names will be snared?
