Jonno Posted 23 July 2004 Posted 23 July 2004 Ok, so about 3 weeks ago the majority of people were crying, moaning, bitching, wanting Adams out, complaining etc. and thought we were going to do well not to get relegated. How confident are you about the new season now we have got more players in? I have to say I am very confident. It's something I not normally am so it says something to me. In Dublin & Connolly I believe we have the best strike force in the league. They could easily both end up with around the 20 goals mark. We have never had a problem scoring goals under Adams, and I don't think next season will be any exception. A defence of Canero, Dabizas, Keown and Makin, for example, is one of the best in the league. You will laugh at that, but think about it. Makin was the best fullback in the leauge last year, and Ipswich were absolutely desperate to hold onto him. Remember how embarrasingly bad Elliott was for us? When he went to Ipswich, one of the best teams in the league last year, he suddenly looked a world class player at this level and any club in the league at that time would have taken him. Keown will be an absolute rock next season imo. I'll say now, I don't like Dabizas at all. I think he is a liability, and I thought he was pretty awful last season to be honest. That said, most people rate him and Adams certainly does, so he must be alright. He is better than Elliott, and Elliott was awesome last year, so maybe he won't do so badly. Everyone here wanks over Canero without any justification whatsoever, but I like the lad, he'll do the job next season. I think he'll be a revelation and will be one of our best players hopefully. Midfield. Scowcroft, Williams, Tiatto and Wilcox will be our first choice midfield, unless we get a good holding midfielder in which case Tiatto will move out to the left. It could well be Williams & Nalis in the middle aswell. Many have the idea that williams is a floaty attacking midfielder, like say Izzet when we had Lennon & Savage, but he's not at all. Before the last 10 games last season, he was more a defensive midfielder than anything else. I think him & Nalis may actually play quite a number of games together. Anyway I think our midfield is pretty good - I'd rather Gillespie in there than Scowy though, but that won't happen. It's not quite good enough though and certainly not enough depth so we need some more midfielders. Billy McKinley would have been perfect for us and I'm a bit bemused as to why we let him go, because clearly first team football & wages aren't a problem to him what with him going to Fulham for less than a grand a week to just play in their reserves. I think we're good for playoffs at least next year and could even scrape an automatic place if we get a good start. But that is the most crucial thing, a good start, and unfortunately for us our best player (Tiatto) is out for the first 3 games, which is pretty bad news as all 3 games are must win ones.
lumberjack Posted 23 July 2004 Posted 23 July 2004 more confident than a confident thing thats just had a confidence boost
Connoly Posted 23 July 2004 Posted 23 July 2004 Best defence in the league? i think thats a bit wide of the mark, mate. Keown is old and past it - players such as Cort at wolves and harewood at west ham will zip past him in a flash. Dabizas is a liability, and i would prefer elliot over him. The others arent even worth mentioning. Play off place is best bet, chaps..
Jonno Posted 23 July 2004 Author Posted 23 July 2004 I said one of, obviously not THE best. Wolves and Forest probably beat us. Name another decent defence in the league though? Makin would make any team in the league, one of Elliott, Dabizas & Keown would make most of them probably. Hell even Heath would get into most sides. Remember last time down here we had the best defence - Walker, Sinclair, Elliott, Taggart and Rogers. I think Walker, Canero, Elliott/Keown/Heath/Dabizas, Makin/Tiatto is better than what we had last time. Surely?
Connoly Posted 23 July 2004 Posted 23 July 2004 id say wolves' defence is probably better than ours. They have got a few classy players, with lescott n murray coming back from injury and have signed edwards from the villa.
Hullfox Posted 23 July 2004 Posted 23 July 2004 I'm with you dog. I'm always an optimist where city are concerned but this time I feel as though there's an argument to back it all up. However, this is Leicester and if it can go wrong, it will
Connoly Posted 23 July 2004 Posted 23 July 2004 we are gonna miss izzet badly, and dickov is better than the ageing dublin by miles! i would like to see carsley from everton sign up!!
Scow Posted 23 July 2004 Posted 23 July 2004 Good post Maddog. I'm beginning to feel more confident about the next season now. I think the signings of both Keown and Connolly have given us all a boost. I agree with you on the point that our defence could be one of the strongest: A comparison of last time in this division. Sinclair/Impey v Makin = Makin- A very solid full back who has played at the highest level and abroad. Dabizas/Heath v Taggart - = Same- I still think Taggart would have done a decent job for us, but I think Dabizas will do well for us - He was a liability last season, but hopefully a Championship strikeforce won't be too much of a problem Elliott v Keown = Keown - He has all that experience of playing in the best back 4 in the country for many years. People talk about pace, or lack of, but he's always been deceptively quick. Rogers v Stewart/Tiatto = Stewart/Tiatto- Much better options that Rogers, who had difficulty in passing to his own players last time round - His distribution was awful. As you can, I think we're in a better position defensively than last time, especially with the addition of Keown who will organise that defence and provide some leadership - Something we have lacked for quite a few years now. Obviously we haven't signed Makin, but I can't see that one happening, and hopefully it does as we need covers in the full back areas as he can play both left and right. Regarding the centre of midfield - I don't think you can play both Williams and Nalis in the centre, they're too similar - Not enough bite or steel. But as you pointed out, someone like McKinlay would have been ideal for us, and I am still bemused as to why we released him. He was actually one of our better players last season, and he would have done an excellent job in this division again.
Guest Daniel Posted 23 July 2004 Posted 23 July 2004 Im not all that confident, i think Micky Mouse has made 2 decent signings in Williams and Connollly, maybe you could say Dublin, but the rest i dont think will do the job, and will flop. My opinions, and without opinions this place would be boring.
Ash Posted 23 July 2004 Posted 23 July 2004 Im quitely confident about this upcoming season , I think are strike force is better than ever , Midfield is ok and the defence seems strong aswell, As always Englands no1 in goal , So YES iam confident we can do well this season !
gagandeep Posted 23 July 2004 Posted 23 July 2004 we are gonna miss izzet badly, and dickov is better than the ageing dublin by miles! i would like to see carsley from everton sign up!! compare dickov to connoly deane to dublin. i would choose connoly and dublin.
