STEVE BRUCE has blocked a cheeky attempt by Barcelona to get a close-up look at Matthew Upson, writes PAT SHEEHAN. The Birmingham manager, who has opened new contract talks with his defender, refused Barca’s invitation for Upson to play at the Nou Camp next Tuesday. Barcelona chiefs have monitored Upson, 25, in almost every match this season and asked the England international to play for a World XI against them to raise money for an AIDS charity. Bruce, afraid Upson might be injured, said: “We will be doing everything we can to ensure he stays with us. “He is a big, big player. We will be talking soon and, make no mistake, we want him to stay.†------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
