cisono Posted 17 December 2006 Posted 17 December 2006 What kind of references were you asked to rent a room in a shared house (shared with landlord)? I am asking because, when my brother visited this house he wanted to rent a room in, he was asked to provide a reference... "a phone number", they said. So my brother gave him my number (without asking me!). Then the landlord started insisting on meeting me. I talked to him on the phone and gave him a verbal reference for my brother. Yet, he was not happy and insisted that he wanted to meet the person giving the reference. This all seems weird to me? a) accepting a reference from a relative? b) insisting on meeting the person giving the reference in person?

lookwhaticando Posted 17 December 2006 Posted 17 December 2006 Your voice obviously does something for him. Avoid! Avoid! Avoid!
Rincewind Posted 17 December 2006 Posted 17 December 2006 A reference is to say that you have known the person for a number of years, For jobs I don't think relatives are normally accepted - has to be a proffesion person doctor/bank manager but for this sort of thing it may be different. A verbal or written reference should be enough. The referees character should not be part of the equation.
cisono Posted 18 December 2006 Author Posted 18 December 2006 Your voice obviously does something for him. Avoid! Avoid! Avoid! The guy freaks me out. I have recommended that my brother gets a reference from him too (if he is really keen on renting a room in that house). I do have a bad feeling about this potential landlord...
Rincewind Posted 18 December 2006 Posted 18 December 2006 If you meet insist on taking somebody with you. Preferably a 20stone all-in-wrestle-builder and say its your husband. r

He seems to be delaying signing the contract, having seconds thoughts, wanting more guarantees. I know he is a law student, but what was he going to ask for next?
