JoeyB Posted 24 February 2007 Posted 24 February 2007 Up to 700 sets of points across the entire rail network are to be checked as a "precaution" following the Cumbria crash, Network Rail has said. Investigators earlier said the accident, in which a woman died, could have been caused by a points failure. Experts are focusing on one set that the Virgin Trains Pendolino ran across before derailing near Kendal. Rail expert Christian Wolmar told the BBC that the points could have been defective with loose bolts and nuts. Network Rail said engineers had already started the nationwide safety checks of between 600 and 700 sets of points. "As a precautionary measure we are beginning to check between 600 and 700 sets of points across the country," a Network Rail spokesman said. Linkage

Geo V Posted 25 February 2007 Posted 25 February 2007 The trains and tubes are terrible in England, especially London. I hope the lottery/Olympic money goes towards taking it up 10 notches like it did in Athens when they had the Olympics. Unfortunately, it wont help out of Londons problems when it comes to rail and something needs to be done before more accidents occur. Best wishes to all those injured and the deceased`s family in Cumbria. RIP
Suffolk_fox Posted 26 February 2007 Posted 26 February 2007 One person killed and that makes the Rail safety in this country appalling? Two people were killed on the A14 not 2 miles from my house this morning, and that beast of a road will no doubt claim more before the month is out. In India when a train derails, hundreds are killed. I think it is a testament to the build of the coaches that more weren't killed. Mistakes happen, and it's always sad when someone dies as a result, but I think the railways are safer in this country these days...

Im not sure how often you use trains but having lived in London for years now and worked in all parts of London, I have had to rely on the trains and tubes. Our trains are so behind the times and our train lines are atrocious at some points. Its a miracle that more accidents havent occured in this country but I`d much rather the authorities were pro-active in getting things right instead of reactive once a disaster hits. BTW comparing us with India! Its no comparison mate unless you think that 60 people inside a bus and 40 hanging outside for the cheaper fare is similar to what we have to go through??!!

Its no comparison mate unless you think that 60 people inside a bus and 40 hanging outside for the cheaper fare is similar to what we have to go through??!! I think that just proves my point. Also, the train involved was extremely modern, and this was probably why more didn't die. You will also find that there was unlikely to be anyone standing. Though I do take your point, (no pun intended) that the overcrowded trains and rolling stock used for commuters in the South are an accident waiting to happen.
