Fez of Mahrez Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 Forest get a freebie but Clemence clinches it late for Leicester Richard Rae at the City Ground Wednesday September 19, 2007 The Guardian Football does not always display a sense of perspective, but it did in Nottingham last night. When the collapse of the City defender Clive Clarke caused this Carling Cup second-round tie to be abandoned at half-time three weeks ago, the Forest club rightly regarded the fact they were leading 1-0 as an irrelevance to their concern for Clarke's well-being. The actions of the Forest medical staff that evening almost certainly saved Clarke's life - his recovery is reported to be progressing well - and City, having expressed their gratitude in the club programme, did likewise on the pitch when they began the match by allowing the Forest goalkeeper, Paul Smith, to walk the ball into an empty net. Thereafter the two East Midlands rivals went at it hammer and tongs, the prize a trip to Aston Villa in the third round. The derby atmosphere was heightened by the presence of the new City manager, Gary Megson, who until February last year was in charge at Forest. Megson did not impress the fans during that 13-month tenure, and they relished an opening half hour in which Forest were comfortably the better team. The pace of Nathan Tyson and Junior Agogo worried the defence and it took a fine save from Marton Fulop to prevent Forest doubling their lead after Tyson's shot was blocked on the line. The City equaliser had a touch of real class as Alan Sheehan, a midfielder with a sweet left foot, if not much else, curled a free-kick over the wall and beyond Smith. Forest then stepped up their efforts, and Fulop had to be at his best to push Luke Chambers' header around the post shortly before half-time. Nearly 20 minutes into the second half, Tyson's speed and power saw him run clear on to Kris Commons' through-ball and shoot powerfully past Fulop to put Forest back in the lead, but on 88 minutes Richard Stearman levelled from close range. Worse was soon to follow for Forest as, with seconds to go, Stephen Clemence struck in the winner for Leicester. "If what we did sets an example for morality and fair play, then I'm pleased," said the City chairman, Milan Mandaric.    !!!
