Well no of course not. This isn't communism.

But to isolate businesses as beneficiaries at the expense of "the people" as cisono appears to have done is misleading.

that's true , but i don't think she meant that it was a black and white situation of "business gains and people lose" but more that the negative effects of immigration are felt more by the lower / working classes and the positive effects are proportionally more beneficial to the better off in society .

but yes, i agree it could be misleading just to state that business gains and people lose

That is the generally-held view, though I haven't actually seen any figures....

Migration from new Eastern European countries towards countries already in the EU has provided extra workforce in some sectors but also created pressure on housing and other services (apparently). I tend to hear more about the latter than the former, though of course that does not mean much in itself.

a bit in depth but heres some of my findings:

"Peugeot-Citroen has revealed that one reason for them to locate in Slovakia is that the wage rates are one-fifth of wages in the EU15 , and hence the supply of cheap labour will be a location-specific advantage for Peugeot-Citroen"

"Zaiceva (2004) predicts that 0.3 to 0.5 million people will move from the CEEC to the EU15 countries after enlargement and that a cumulative figure of 3.5 to 5 million people will migrate from the CEECs from 2004 to 2014. Breuss (2001) predicts that in 2010 there will be a migration of 72,100 persons into the EU15 only from the three countries of Hungary, the Czech Republic and Poland. "

"Iakova (2007) reporting on the macroeconomic effects of EU enlargement on the UK economy finds that there are macroeconomic benefits of immigration from the CEECs, as both total and per capita output, and consumption, will increase in the medium term."

"UK as the National Health Service (NHS) has been spending, £350m a year for maternity services for foreign-born mothers, and in 2006 there were 15,000 more Eastern European babies born than a decade ago . The EU15 will gain benefits from the immigration of migrants from the CEECs, but will also face problems of increased public expenditure if the right infrastructure for dealing with immigrants is not in place"
