PS2 Wireless controllers

Ever since I started using wireless controllers, they seem to control themselves once the batteries start to die.

Right now im TRYING to play F1 06. If I change direction, the view of my car changes. If I pause the game, it automatically cancels the pause and the game gets going again. It's complete chaos. I cant actually get back to the menu.

Should this really be happening once the batteries start to die?
