renards Posted 10 May 2009 Posted 10 May 2009 During the 90s O'Neill mostly used the wingback formation 3-5-2, so I'd say Guppy and Kaamark were more midfielders, especially Guppy anyway. Sinclair usually played wingback when I watched him play, but Sinclair wasn't really first choice. Tagget was taken on as cover for Walsh (his words) MON hand was forced into playing this system by Taggs playing so well (of course MON took full credit for this master stroke) I think we have 3 centre half's prepared to play to this system however I don't think any of our wide players (Gradel and LD ) can defend that well, Mattock can but struggles to track back

FilboFox Posted 10 May 2009 Posted 10 May 2009 As has already been said, Elliott, Taggart, Walsh, Sinclair, Impey? None of them had pace and were a fantastic unit at the back... it's all about playing to our strengths and that should that mean dropping them back a little to not risk being outpaced by the Championship strikers, so be it. We had one of the best defenses last time round in the Championship and that wasn't with the quickest back line... so no, it's not a fair comment to make.
Pegosteve Posted 10 May 2009 Posted 10 May 2009 I don't think we should need to worry about our defence, the last 2 seasons it has been solid and NP was a good defender in his own right so knows exactly what is needed. My concern is our ability to score goals at Championship level, which, proved our downfall in the season we shall not speak about. We need 3 class strikers to have any chance of pushing on something we don`t currently have.
