IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP AGAINST TOP STRIKERS DO WE HAVE ENOUGH PACEMATTOCK IS SLOW BROWN ISNT PACEY MORRISONS A UNIT HOBBS NOT REALLY THE QUICKEST ANY1 ELSE THINK THAT IS A FAIR COMMENT ? ...no. You've cited Brown/Hobbs/Morrison who are all centre backs, a position where pace is not an attribute of paramount importance. Positioning, tackling, heading abilities yes, and they have those in abundance. Defensively it's only the right back postion that's an issue at the moment, but that will be resolved i'm sure. Oh...and turn the caps lock off!
flanimal Posted 8 May 2009 Posted 8 May 2009 In Leicester's glory years in the mid 90s, the back line was Elliott, Taggart and Walsh. No pace there. I don't think Mattock will play much next season, Pearson's realising he's not all that. Gilbert had pace to burn.
J.Lisemore Posted 8 May 2009 Posted 8 May 2009 You can have all the pace you want as a defender, but if you haven't got the anticipation etc then your going nowhere. Our defence has been brillaint this season even without Tunchev.
Unabomber Posted 9 May 2009 Posted 9 May 2009 oh fook off you bellend our defence is our strongest area
Jimmy Posted 9 May 2009 Posted 9 May 2009 you don't need loads of pace if you can read the game, Teddy Sheringham wasn't the quickest but he read the game so well that didn't matter, Tunchev can, Hobbs is getting better as is Morrison
dandannieldanok Posted 9 May 2009 Posted 9 May 2009 oh fook off you bellendour defence is our strongest area Bit harsh on him but I agree. Our defence is virtually sorted now bar sorting out a deal for Gilbert. We need to concentrate on other areas of the pitch.

IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP AGAINST TOP STRIKERS DO WE HAVE ENOUGH PACEMATTOCK IS SLOW BROWN ISNT PACEY MORRISONS A UNIT HOBBS NOT REALLY THE QUICKEST ANY1 ELSE THINK THAT IS A FAIR COMMENT ? To be fair i think it is a valid point you are making. Our defence has been brilliant this season and hopefully will be next season, but Brown especially does lack pace and i could see us being caught out next season. Hopefully Gilbert will sign or we will get him on loan as he has pace, and Mattock does have pace he can just be abit clumsy at times. The championship seems to be more of a physical league rather than pacey(well both really). I thought this season in league 1 there was more football played than we have played in the championship (but then that could be due to us being rubbish in the championship), but what is a slight concern is the physical strength you need for the championship. I dont know if as a team we have the strength to really compete in the championship. I think with another tall strong striker we will be fine, its just the lack of physical strength in midfield that may be a concern But all in all im happy with the team, and cant wait until next season
morris1234 Posted 9 May 2009 Posted 9 May 2009 WHY IS EVERYBODY FINDING SOMETHING TO F**KING MOAN ABOUT? caps OFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!
foxoffderby Posted 9 May 2009 Posted 9 May 2009 Bit harsh on him but I agree. Our defence is virtually sorted now bar sorting out a deal for Gilbert. We need to concentrate on other areas of the pitch. I agree very harsh comments this is a forum after all. True our defence has been our greatest asset, but it was league 1 with due respect to teams in that league a lot of the play is in the air. A quick defender would of been nice, however as stated we need to concentrate on the midfield and attack.
morris1234 Posted 9 May 2009 Posted 9 May 2009 unless a striker is seriously gifted with pace, i dont think it matters whether youre defender is quick or not, like somebody else said its all positioning whther youre a striker or defender slow or fast, if youve got the better position you have the upper hand. didnt mean to get nasty before haha its just annoying coming on here every now and then and seeing another thread about how crap something is .
Hitesh Posted 9 May 2009 Posted 9 May 2009 I think that Tunchev and Hobbs both make up with the fact they aren't super quick with their ability to read the game well and focus on the next move - when I have seen them, they have both been one step ahead generally and their anticipation is great - something that will bode well next season. Kisnorbo and McAuley didnt have great pace last season but both held the defence well. Just hope we can get a couple of full backs in with a bit of pace though to help the wingers when attacking (Gilbert would be a good choice IMO).
Flynny Posted 9 May 2009 Posted 9 May 2009 Mattock isn't slow he's just flat footed and reacts slowly. Which is good, because it means he'll get better (hopefully).
Uncle Albert Posted 9 May 2009 Posted 9 May 2009 Our defence in 07/08 wasnt very quick either, Kisnorbo, G Mac, Mattock and Stearman hardly quick and that was one of the strongest defences in the League and we got relegated. And to be honest if the only thing you can find in our defence is the lack of pace then you need to have a long look at yourself mate.

I don't think Mattock will play much next season, Pearson's realising he's not all that. Gilbert had pace to burn. Didn't people like Kaamark and Guppy play in our defence too? And I don't remember Steve Whitlow and Frank Sinclair being slouches into the tackle either. Taggart and Walsh were goodish defenders but they had much to thank the others for. I always recall our best defensive centre as being Frank McLintock, Ian King and Colin Appleton back in the 60s. A trio that combined pace, energy and determination with the ability to break forward and use the ball accurately. We know that Tunchev uses the ball well. Brown is a good organiser and I still have hope that Hobbs will improve his distribution but I still worry pace wise and particularly since I don't think we're especially efficient at full-back either in defence or attack. Not that Gilbert and Mattock were the worst I've seen by any means. We've been tight enough against all of the top teams in Divison One this season so it's nonsense to talk ourselves into a crisis but I do think there's room for stronger competition and for Mattock to improve considerably.

During the 90s O'Neill mostly used the wingback formation 3-5-2, so I'd say Guppy and Kaamark were more midfielders, especially Guppy anyway. Sinclair usually played wingback when I watched him play, but Sinclair wasn't really first choice.

Yes, it meant plenty of protection for slowish centre-backs and the early smothering of a lot of potential crosses.
flanimal Posted 9 May 2009 Posted 9 May 2009 Big fan of the wingback system. Wouldn't be surprised if NP uses it next year. Three centre backs of Tunchev, Hobbs and Brown. Gradel is quite defensive and tracks back, could be a good wingback. Who knows. A 3-5-2 definitely adds protection and beefs up midfield - but knackers the wingbacks!

Dan Posted 9 May 2009 Posted 9 May 2009 Our poor defensive distribution concerns me more than lack of pace. Apart from Tunchev who I thinks all round quality.
