toonboy Posted 1 June 2005 Posted 1 June 2005 In games outside of tournaments the England team always have to start with numbers 1 to 11. Club kits are different in that a player will be allocated a squad number which they keep this for the year, but International football retains the traditional 1-11 As no players are guaranteed a place in the England team, therefore no players are guaranteed the same number every time they play. The more established players will generally play with the same number e.g. David Beckham 7, or Michael Owen 10, but theoretically others could wear those numbers. The number 5 shirt for example has been worn by Ledley King, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry and Jamie Carragher over the last year. The only time an England player will be allocated a squad number is for a tournament - e.g. the World Cup - and they'll use this number throughout the period of the tournament. Apart from then any outfield starting player will play with numbers 2-11. Thats from the FA website.
