The town is leading the way from four other shortlisted in a publicity stunt by internet insurance company Compare The Market. If it wins, the town will be able to change its name to Meerkat Harborough for a day. The company behind the campaign has also promised to donate £5,000 towards a community project. The four other UK towns which have been nominated are Market Drayton (Meerkat Drayton), Windermere (Windermeer), Downham Market (Downham Meerkat) and Western Super Mare (Western Super Meer). The shortlist was drawn up to promote the meerkat character Aleksandr Orlov. Thousands of people have voted on the Facebook site. Market Harborough has received 60 per cent of the votes so far.
