Realities and Managers

In a recent article in the Sunday Times, Leicester City was described as a “middling” club, alongside Notts Forest. Someone on this forum objected to this. I have watched Leicester City since 1949 and must agree with this. The position of the club in the rank of English football has on average been at the upper level of the second tier.

There have been brief flirtations with the top division but these invariably resulted in fairly quick demotion.

There will no doubt be howls of protest at these sentiments and fans will say “that’s history, what about now”

Now we have owners who require that the City are a premiership club. Without definitely knowing their intentions, I’d guess that this was their prime aim. This would give them a major boost to their commercial interests elsewhere, particularly in their native Thailand and other Asian countries.

Yes, they have invested a large amount of cash in the club. Yes a large amount for a championship side but enough for the Premiership? I doubt it. Several players that have been bought recently were, in the opinion of Premiership managers, not good enough for their sides.

The owners paid a largish sum of money to attract a manager of some renown, Mr Eriksson.. This fame requires examination. The last major championship was with Lazio in 2000, 11 years ago. Since then he has managed England, Manchester City, Mexico, The Ivory Coast and Notts County. I invite anyone to look at the (lack of) achievements with these teams.

Personally I think the owners chose a celebrity whose name was known in places much further afield than Leicester.

The fans of Leicester City, myself amongst them hope my amateur analysis is incorrect and that successful and permanent Premiership status is achieved but I fear we should settle for a championship side which wins more games than it loses

I wish Leicester City success
