Academy Scholars - 24 hour rowing challenge

The Leicester City Academy will turn its 'scholars' into 'scullers' next week in support of the LCFC Foxes Foundation's One In A Million campaign.

On Monday 19 December, the Club's Under-18 squad will attempt to complete a 24-hour rowing challenge in the city to raise funds for the Foxes' official charity campaign for the 2011-12 season.

Starting their rowing machines at BBC Radio Leicester's studios in St Nicholas Place, the current group of apprentices will row in relay from 8am on Monday until 8am on Tuesday, relocating the challenge to various parts of the city throughout the day.

Following the morning session at BBC Radio Leicester (8am-10am), the challenge will move on to the Leicester Highcross shopping centre until 3pm, before moving on to the Food Court at Fosse Park until 10pm. The Foxes stars of the future will then take their challenge back to the Club's Belvoir Drive Training Facility and work through the night to complete the 24-hour shift.

Working in two groups between the four locations and rowing in pairs, their start-times will be coordinated to make sure their 'oars' do not go down once during the 24 hours.

All funds raised from the challenge will go directly to the One In A Million campaign, which aims to raise £150,000 for ten Leicester charities during the 2011-12 season, thus taking the funds raised by Club Ambassador Alan Birchenall past £1million in his 40th year with the Club.

City's Under-18s will take on their 24-hour rowing challenge on Monday.

Academy Director Jon Rudkin said: "The scholars were all keen to do something to support such a fantastic cause while giving themselves a real test and this challenge should serve both purposes really well.

"They came up with the rowing concept themselves, which will be very demanding physically, but we're hoping to receive some support from some familiar faces over the course of the day and hopefully raise some money for a worthy cause."
