dhermon Posted 23 February 2012 Posted 23 February 2012 Just started a syndicate with a few mates from cricket and after a long chat to the other syndicate manager we are thinking of training 1 or 2 dogs ourselves and racing them on weekends at one of the country tracks here in victoria so i was wondering ......... Has anyone on here done it before and can pass on some much needed advice on the dos and don'ts of the sport
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 23 February 2012 Posted 23 February 2012 I've owned over a dozen greyhounds had a couple of handy ones. First thing is you will need a licence or you wont be able to race them in any track in Australia. You will need to know how to rear them and most importanently find a good breaker. If they don't get broken in properly you may as well put it down. Also go down to your local track or trials and try and get some advice off local trainers. Most are pretty searly sort of people but some will help you out, even if it means you need to volunteer to help them out one night. Oh and it's bloody hard work even if you only have 1-2 dogs there nothing like normal pets. What's the breeding?
dhermon Posted 24 February 2012 Author Posted 24 February 2012 Not going for pups for training getting ready to race dogs where that type of hard work has been done already so alot of the major hassles will be removed that way The trainer of our syndicate dog has said we are welcome to drive up to merrigum and help her out 1 sunday get hands on experience and GRV run courses from time to time but thats wayyyy out past shep 2+ hour drive Will be training out of a friends or my parents backyard only spending upto $1000 on greyhounds for us to train try and get a rough diamond and give it a wee bit of a polish as we both still work full time we would only be able to run them saturday or sundays up at healesville I did have our syndicate dogs breeding but my 18 month old daughter has managed to get into my Iphone and delete a who bunch of our syndicate texts ( I'll see if i can find the details again and will post em ere) Paula Boots has our dog atm and she seems very helpful and nice willing to pass on tips and stuff but yeah 2+ hour drive makes it hard to get hands on as for the friend of a friend who i know that trains hes not so much surley more just a dick that id rather not speak to if i could help it!! ( Sorry reply is all over the place but struggling to get into words alot of what ive got in my head atm )
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 24 February 2012 Posted 24 February 2012 That's ok. Yeah just don't expect it a tried dog for $1000 to be much chop but like you said u may snare a win at Healsville. All the best with it there is no better experience of having a winner. My best win was my first pup i brought had it from 3 months of age. It's first start it was an emergency down at Warragul but got a start. The Trainer said it's got a bit of ability but don't expect too much as he isn't a super star and we don't know what the other dogs in the race are like. It got up paying $10 getting up by a length, my brother and i were going off. I went out on to the track and got the photo taken and still have it up on my wall. It went on to win 10 off it's next 27 starts and running in the city and snaring some placings there.
dhermon Posted 25 February 2012 Author Posted 25 February 2012 Brillant stuff!!! pretty much what we are aiming for a fair bit of fun a few ups and downs a win or 2 at healesville or shep maybe a trip or 2 round metro tracks then kick on to training a dog or 2 for ourselves and see how we go Emma our current dog with Paula breeding is Premier Fantasy x Shesa que tee need to win 4k to make our money back on her as u know trainers take 50% cut so roughly 8 country wins over her career and we will be happy will happily take the 40k prize money on offer though for winning the healesville cup too Whos training your dogs atm or used to train your dogs ? P.S Keep an eye out for a horse called HANKS it won last night paying $4 at the valley its my cousins horse
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 25 February 2012 Posted 25 February 2012 Had a few different trainers main ones Paul Anderton and Damien Crawford in Vic. Peter Jovanovic and Des Hockley in SA. Moate in Tas. Enzo Curali in WA. Have used more trainers. You pretty much have to send the dogs to places there likely to win races and some trainers may not think the dog is good enough or don't have room in there kennel. Just looked to see if one of my dogs still held a track record in WA but sadly it doesn't. Prem Fantasy is a good sire and has a great strike rate.
dhermon Posted 1 March 2012 Author Posted 1 March 2012 Emma/Blind Burra had her first ever timed run this morning over 390ms ran a decent 23.49
dhermon Posted 4 May 2012 Author Posted 4 May 2012 Well its time to update this...... Greyhounds ahhh just like city ups and downs she ran 22.6 trainer was happy with her but said she was favouring her rear left leg ...................turns out dodgey toe that has since been removed stitches came out today so still not made it to the track but Paula is aiming for middle of the month or end of may worst case... Now have shares in 11 Dogs got onto a syndicate site and have since gone nuts buying into anything that moves Paul Anderton will be hopefully be training a few and is going to the Dapto puppy auctions this sunday with Warren who runs the site to buy our syndicate a pup to run in the Dapto series only 300 dogs in the auction and the winner of the final wins 75k!!! i like the odds of finding the winner
