Liverpool fan in Bulgaria

By any standards the heel kicking over the Liverpool fan jailed in Bulgaria is diabolical.

This country is due to be a member of the EC in 2007 yet what sort of attitude to justice is this.

Another fan has signed a confession to say he injured the barman in question and the one presently lanquishing at a jail in Varna insists (and has witnesses) that he wasn't even there.

What can be done?

Well a major source of income for the Bulgarians is holiday flights during the summer to Varna and Bourgas from places like Manchester and Birmingham.

Can pressure be applied to stop the flights or to discourage people from holidaying on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast?

Secondly the British Government should call for an immediate delay in Bulgaria's admittance to the EC (for say three years) and an immediate end to supportive money being paid into that country by the EC to facilitate their admittance.

Unless the guy is released in 48 hours.

It isn't justice and the Bulgarians should be ashamed.

PS: If anyone has friends among Liverpool fans and who use Liverpool websites you are welcome to pass these suggestions onto them. Pressure through the media on these grounds etc might secure an early release because the money being pumped into that country by us at the moment is considerable.

Steady on there.

How can you be sure about what went on in Bulgaria? Were you there?

What is beyond doubt is that some poor Bulgarian bloke had his skull fractured for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. A group of scousers know who did it, but for their own cowardly purposes decided to keep silent until they were safely back home in Liverpool.

The lad convicted of this crime may indeed be innocent, but it's for the Bulgarian authorities to sort out. As anyone who can recall the aftermath of the Heysel atrocities of 1985 can confirm, scousers have a less than glittering reputation of covering up for their misdeeds.

The Bulgarian ambassador to the UK has pledged to investigate the matter. We should let the appeal process take its course. Hysterical calls for sanctions would not be helpful to the bloke's case.

Oh, and it's not as if miscarriages of justice don't take place in Britain from time to time...

Do you imply that "being safely home" means that the confession signatory won't be put on the plane to answer for his doings in a new trial?

I don't have much faith in the Bulgarian Ambassador as a sprinter. Reports from Anglo-Bulgarian sites forever suggest that if you want anything from the Bulgarian Embassy then don't bother cos it won't happen anyday soon. They make an art form of dragging their feet. This would certainly be an ideal opportunity to set a new trend.

And that's the point. Why should an obviously innocent man spend months and months in prison?. The confessor should be there and double quick.

Well as I'm not sure whether we have an extradition agreement with Bulgaria... it's not certain whether he will be flying back...

If he has a conscience, he should fly back there asap (at his own expense) and fess up to whatever really happened!
