Turns Down Cardiff Move

Riordan turns down Cardiff move

Boyd says no to Cardiff approach

Hibernian striker Derek Riordan has rejected a £500,000 move to Cardiff.

The two clubs agreed a fee last week, but the 22-year-old was reluctant to make the switch and was given the weekend to mull over his options.

Riordan's agent Jim McArthur has now confirmed that his player will stay at Hibs for the immediate future.

Meanwhile, Cardiff wing Richard Langley and striker Stuart Fleetwood are set to complete moves to Crystal Palace and Cheltenham by the middle of the week.

The Bluebirds have now conceded that they are unlikely to bring in a new striker before the transfer window closes.

Their £300,000 move for Kilmarnock's Kris Boyd was thwarted as the player proved reluctant to join the Championship club, despite passing a medical and agreeing personal terms.

Striker search frustrates Jones

Cardiff manager Dave Jones has been encouraged by Cameron Jerome's growing understanding up front with Alan Lee in their last two games.

But the former Wolves and Southampton manager says the lack of strength in depth is costing the Bluebirds valuable points.

Riordan was Scotland's Young Player of the Year last season after netting 23 times for Hibs.

He still has 14 months of his current contract to run and the Easter Road club appear anxious to cash in on the player.

"What we have to do is look at the long-term future of this football club," said Hibs manager Tony Mowbray.

"We cannot just continue to produce young players and then let them walk away at the end of their contracts for nothing.

"It isn't as if we haven't been working very hard to get Derek to sign what would be the best contract that anyone at this club earns.

"We are not trying to undercut him or not pay him his worth but the best we can afford. We are trying to create a unity in our squad, we don't have a huge diversity in salaries.

"For me the players in the squad have to know their worth, we have a structure in place and if they develop they climb that scale until they are at the top.

"What Derek has been offered is at the very top of that scale, it is not as if he wouldn't be getting paid the same as Gary Caldwell or Garry O'Connor."
