The versatile Scottish-born forward made his name at Sunderland, who he joined from local club Coatbridge Juniors, staying on Wearside over a decade and being part of numerous Black Cats teams that suffered relegation and experienced promotion campaigns.

Hughes, brother of Celtic famous forward John, was also part of the Sunderland team that famously won the FA Cup in 1973, taking the corner in the build-up to the goal that won them the game, and also scored four goals en route to that Wembley appearance.

His time as a Mackem came to an end in 1977 when Derby County signed him but, without really hitting top-form with the Rams, Foxes boss Frank McLintock took him to Filbert Street to help Leicester in their battle against relegation. He stayed at City little over a year and moved across the pond to San Jose Earthquakes after a loan stint with Carlisle, although he didn't really settle in America and tumbled down the league ladder on his return to England.
