Ayrshire-born Campbell joined Leicester in July 1931 and spent two-and-a-half years at the club.

He featured in City's first-ever home clash against continental opposition in January 1933 - against Rapid Vienna, which finished 3-1 to the visitors - but will be remembered for missing a penalty in that game.

However, his goals-to-games ratio was good, netting 14 goals in 22 league and cup appearances, but it wasn't enough to see him stay at City for long and a move to Lincoln City soon followed. Despite suffering relegation with Lincoln, Campbell scored over a century of league goals in four seasons with the club.

On leaving the game Campbell became Superintendent Optician for Lincoln Co-Op.
