Lianne NormanCity's opening game in this season's Women's FA Cup saw them cruise through with a comfortable victory over Cambridge United in the first qualifying round of the competition.

Both teams set their stalls out in the early stages of the match. Cambridge forced a corner that was cleared by Rachel Williams to set up Aimee Chivers, who played a good early ball for Lianne Norman (pictured right) to fire home with only six minutes played.

City continued to press forward, Williams and Norman combined well, but Williams' shot soared over the bar and a solid strike from Chivers moments later just skimmed the far post.

On twenty minutes Leicester doubled their lead, a superb cross from Caz Toone was side footed past the 'keeper to give super-striker Norman her second of the game.

City should have extended their lead further when captain Laura Morris had a free header from Toone's corner that went wide of the target and another great shot from Norman also flew past the post.

At the other end Cambridge were awarded a free kick just outside the box, but great defending from England U19 star Williams cleared any danger.

Norman sealed her first hat-trick of the season on 36 minutes, a great through ball from Katherine Glass and an equally fine finish.

City were now well on top of their game. Toone and Chivers both saw efforts go wide of the post and a Leanne DeSilva shot forced a great fingertip save from the Cambridge goalkeeper. The resulting corner was met by the head of Jade Radburn but the 'keeper again made a good save.

United did force their way into the Leicester box just before the interval but Glass was on hand to produce a tremendous tackle to save City's clean sheet.

Cambridge came out more determined in the second half, again they forced the early corner and again City's defence cleared, this time Lekeisha Gumbs blocking the danger ball. Aimee Cattel in the City goal was called into action minutes later but she made no mistake making an excellent stop.

City were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position after Chivers was brought down from behind, but Williams strong shot went wide. Norman shaved the post moments later and Leanne Griffin had two great chances that both went wide of the target, but DeSilva made no mistake with her blistering strike from 20 yards to put City four up without reply on 71 minutes.

Lou Ward and Gumbs both forced saves before Radburn hit the net on 80 minutes. A great ball again from Caz Toone and a superb finish wrapped the game up.

City's next opponents in the FA Cup will be Loughborough Dynamo Women, this game to be played on Sunday September 25. Next weekend Leicester continue their league campaign travelling to Oadby Town Ladies.
