  1. I'd say you cant just use any old motherboard, depends on what bits that will fit into it and if it will fit in the case you have in respect to the slots for usb etc, then depending on what disk you have with it wil affect this decision also If it is the motherboard, then your best bet is to replace it like for like, thus avoiding any issues
  2. Could be various things wrong with it,and without someone looking at it,its hard to tell could be the motherboard/power supply You can try and removing the ram, disconnect the HD and DVD drives etc, then see if it boots, if it dont then, then you can plug it all back in,and try it again but this time just take out any PCI cards you have,if any. My guess its the motherboard and/or power supply
  3. Its very unusual for people to have just the anti vir installed, most users have the suite which includes a firewal; what version u have?
  4. Never heard of Norton antivirus on its blocking access to the net before, maybe on a LAN network as it might detect some activity as suspect giving a false positive If it Norton suite i'd say yes maybe, but never just the antivirus, and if it did, it was probably a bug in the program. But if you say it has, then i take your word for it, cant be arsed to google I use Nod32 on mine btw, useful little proggy, always found Norton a resource hog,but i havent used it for a few years, think 2003 was the last time If anyone wants a cough cough, working version of it,let me know, and i will host it somewhere for download ( I have ESET.NOD32.Antivirus.Business.Edition.4.0.417 -which is fully update-able)
  5. ok anti vir doesnt block internet then not in my experience anyhow thats the firewalls job
  6. Wireless? Ethernet? Open your router settings (I guess you know how to do that?) 192.168 etc etc and check whether UPnP is on/off turn it off if its on,and then reboot, that might work If wireless, try using Ethernet adapter for a bit Check test socket hidden behind BT socket Change filters And btw anti vir' shouldnt block the internet Just a few basics that you should be trying
  7. 7 english and a irishman standing in a I.D parade for a suspected Rape charge Woman walks in,and the Irishman jumps out and yells "Thats Her,the ungrateful fat bitch" 2 irishmen stand looking at a tall flagpole, with there aim to measure the Height from top to bottom, There step ladders dont reach,so they stand there puzzled Englishman walks up and asks them what they are doing, they explain, and with that, the englishman takes down the pole, lays it on the floor and measures it,and gives them the answer, and off he goes on his way First irishman says to the other "Typical englishman, we ask for the height, and he gives us the bloody length"
  8. are you trying to edit the registry?,i.e delete files in the registry? have you tried doing a system restore?
  9. You need to increase virtual memory go to control panel/system/advanced/performance/settings/advanced/-where it says virtual memory, click on change, and see what the intial/maximum settings are at in MB Post that info here
  10. Never does any harm doing a fresh install of windows i guess, although some get scared of it.
  11. Re-Installing windows is a tech guys easy cop out to be honest buddy if he said you had a virus, then maybe you did? I'd like to know what the name of the virus was how did he charge you btw?,if anything?
  12. How much ram have you got?. normally they will slow your PC down a little, but your internet...hmm try disabling it first, then running the net,see if that makes any difference, and then post back might just be the way its set up,it might be scanning everything in sight
  13. FFS,dont tell someone to they have a Virus when they may not have!!!!! I wouldnt do anything drastic like reinstalling windows until you have looked for an answer properly its probably just your PC has forgotten what to do with the file extension .exe (do a google search on how to fix i.e xp .exe fix) actually, you can get it from here, just look down the list (EXE File Association Fix (Restore default association for EXE files) http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm Just download it,extract the REG file, and run it,it will modify your registry to Re-associate .exe files with programs Or it might be that your Registry is a bit screwed up,in which case it may be a case of using the repair disk
  14. ram bascially makes the pc run quicker I have 2 sticks of 512 in mine You need to know what stick is in yours, and you should be looking to mirror what you have ideally they are normally about the £20-25 mark, maybe a little more check what you have by right clicking on My computer, and click properties,I have a 2.8ghz with 1 gb of ram you can check whats going on on your PC by right clicking on the bottom tab,and selecting task manager, see if anything is hogging your CPU The SYSTEM IDLE % (at the bottom of the list normalyl should hang around the 90 mark or thereabouts),thats if you are not using any system hogging apps) You may want to try a do a defrag also Start/programs/Accessories/system tools/disk defragmenter (this basically tidies up your Harddrive,as after a while things get stored all over the place, thus you pc spends more time looking for stuff) This site is useful also, you can run a free diagnostics scan, along with some other stuff http://www.pcpitstop.com/ Lastly, make sure you havent got any virus I dont know what Anti virus you have, but i recommend AVG anti spyware (The free version is very good) http://free.avg.com/ Dont be tempted in running 2 Anti virus at the same time
  15. Thats not entirely correct, and you should always beable un-do any changes you have made you can set a system restore to revert back to the settings on a previous date, and always set it back forward to where you started from Its a very useful tool actualy,i always set it when i am making changes to the PC that i am not sure about, and a few times it has got me out of sticking situations The only time you should be careful with system restore is if and when you have a had a virus on the pc,other than that its totally safe
  16. have you tried the old fashioned system restore point,I dont think it recovers deleted jpegs, but its worth a punt
  17. I prefer ethernet,as they tend to be more stable, and you might need it with talk talk, cause IMO there shite you can pick a ehernet card up for about 4 squid from amazon
  18. Not using vista, but the old fashioned Hold WIN+R should work And while i am at it,you probably have it hidden under start properties right click on start/properties/customise/click the run tab Like i say,i havent got vista,so i am guessing my instructions are correct
  19. I know its been Nov since you last posted, but your statement on what you use sorta confuses me? Dvd decrypter cant shrink movies,it only has a burn engine, maybe you got your wires crossed i dunno? For copying Movies i recommend you use a program called CLONEDVD/ANYDVD http://www.slysoft.com/en/ Clonedvd shrinks and burns the images Anydvd works in the background and removes any copyright protection
  20. Dont bother with that crap Go to amazon and get one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-FREEAGENT-...8099&sr=8-1 Or from PC world http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw...:SortOrder_DOWN There are cheaper Seagates, with smaller space, the choice is yours Or you can also burn the mp3's as data using nero onto a dvd disk (i.e 4.3gb worth for about £.030)
