Levein's view on the crazy happenings of Wednesday :P

The £3million sale of David Connolly to Wigan represents a good deal for Leicester City, says Craig Levein.

The City manager admitted it was a blow to lose the striker, but said once Connolly made it clear he wanted to leave there was no point trying to keep him.

Instead, it was a matter of "maximising the deal" for Leicester, he said.

Now Levein has used some of the cash to bring in Tranmere forward Iain Hume and permanently secure the services of striker Elvis Hammond, who had been on loan from Fulham.

Levein said: "Once David realised there was an opportunity to play in the Premiership we couldn't do a lot about it. He has never made a secret of his desire to play there. I am not a great believer in keeping players that don't want to be here.

"It was about maximising the amount of money we could get and we have got a good deal.

"It's not the end of the world. We will certainly move on and go ahead with plans to progress."

Connolly, who has signed a three-year contract, said on Wigan's website: "The move has all come about very quickly, but I'm delighted to be playing in the Premiership at last.

"When you look at what's been achieved here in such a short space of time it's an incredible story, and I'm looking forward to playing my part in the adventure."

The deal will see City initially receive £2m for Connolly, a figure that could rise by another £1m. Part of the cash was immediately used to sign Hume from Tranmere, despite last-ditch attempts from at least one other Championship club to hijack the deal.

The Canada international, who has signed a three-year deal, cost City an initial £500,000 which could rise to £750,000.

He scored 15 league goals last season in 42 starts and two substitute appearances.

Levein said: "I have watched him for quite a while now.

"He is quick and aggressive and the type of player that will improve with us. I am excited we managed to capture him ahead of other interested clubs."

On a deadline day of frantic activity at the Walkers Stadium, City also signed Hammond for a fee that could eventually rise to £350,000. The deal will keep Hammond at City until June 2008.

Tommy Wright has joined Blackpool on loan with a view to a permanent deal. The Seasiders said that the 20-year-old City striker had joined initially until January but that a fee had been agreed between the two clubs to make the deal permanent.

It is understood Wright will not play when the two sides meet in the Carling Cup later this month.

and a fee involved! Bonus..

so it was down to Mr. Levein that we managed to bag over the odds for Conners. And also some ****er tried to nab Hume from under our feet.. I hope it was Sheffield Wednesday - and we thrash them on September the 10th

I suspect it was Stoke as they are/were desperately looking to bring in a striker as well...

Don't get carried away, it is Wright afterall - the fee is probably £5, low enough to encourage a deal and get another useless muppet off the wage bill, and just a few quid more than his true value. :P

Seriously tho I don't think his fee will be much more than a few tens of thousands, if that.
