In a soon to be released book, 'Wings But No Angel',  Troubador publushing, ISBN: 9781805144656 Ray is recorded as having served in the Royal Marines in WW2 and was shipwrecked.

He then volunteered for, (and was accepted), the 1st SAS/1st SBS. He was part of one of the regiments largest ever raids; one of it's costliest; and was part of a specially selected force of 18? that operated at Lake Commachio, Northern Italy, where the units sole VC was posthumously awarded. Ray is mentioned on many occasions in the book and his military career is largely unreported.

Just reading a book about 'Stirling's Men'. No mention of this name (or Ken Smith).
