cisono Posted 15 December 2005 Posted 15 December 2005 We all know the benefits of Firefox (if you have forgotten, please refer to previous threads on this very topic). However, I have recently noticed that started getting rather annoyed at the following occurrence: whenever I download a file, Firefox seems to hang until the file has started downloading (could be up to half a minute). It feels as if part of it was coded in a non-multithreaded way, if you know about programming. Now, this is extremely annoying - as you can imagine - particularly since a more lightweight (but still tabbed) internet browser such as the SlimBrowser does not suffer from this problem at all. Has anyone experienced this? I am running Firefox version 1.5 (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051111 Firefox/1.5).
Guest Posted 15 December 2005 Posted 15 December 2005 The other half downloaded the new version, and we've had no problems.
cisono Posted 16 December 2005 Author Posted 16 December 2005 New one works fine for me at home and at work. OK guys, so it works for you but... perhaps you use it differently. It would help if you could answer the questions below for me (if you use Firefox). 1) Does Firefox work fine for you? (What version)? 1a) Does it slow down noticeably at times, particularly when downloading files? 1b) Does it successfully open pdf files when you click on such a link on a web page? 2) How long do you typically use Firefox for without closing it down? 3) How many instances of Firefox do you run at a time? 4) How many tabs do you typically use (how many pages do you view) at a time? 5) How many plugins have you installed? I just wonder if the difference between it working fine and slowing down lies somewhere in there... Thanks.
Jordan Posted 16 December 2005 Posted 16 December 2005 I'll only experience a slowdown for the Download box to pop up if there are multiple files downloading, but it doesn't seem to bother me that much.

Thanks. 1) yup, works grand: v 1.5 1a) nope, I download lots of stuff, but the FF browser isnt affected, even if I'm D/Ling thru FF 1b) yes, it does now, but I've had major issues with ALL of the previous versions of FF, even after making sure I had the latest version of Adobe reader. 2) Varies, obviously, but maintain exactly the same responses from FF after 12 hours or more 3) 3 at most 4) up to about a dozen in any 1 instance, but often more. Depends what I'm at. 5) 11 & am using the Noia 2.0 extreme theme I just wonder if the difference between it working fine and slowing down lies somewhere in there... is it possible that you have something else installed that is trying to use the same port that FF is using to D/L?? HTH
cisono Posted 28 December 2005 Author Posted 28 December 2005 is it possible that you have something else installed that is trying to use the same port that FF is using to D/L?? HTH Possible it is but... it just seems strange that my other browser (the SlimBrowser) seems to be much faster at downloading and NEVER crashes, while firefox does for me. I am starting to think it may be some extension that is doing that. Rather annoying though... and not easy to isolate which one it may be. Also nice to see that the SlimBrowser uses much LESS memory than Firefox... (although I don't like the fact that they seem to want to go commercial in the long-run...).
Hitesh Posted 6 January 2006 Posted 6 January 2006 1) Does Firefox work fine for you? (What version)? V1.5..works as good as the last version which was excellent! 1a) Does it slow down noticeably at times, particularly when downloading files? Only for a second so that the download status bar at the bottom loads. 1b) Does it successfully open pdf files when you click on such a link on a web page? I have an extension which asks where i want the pdf file to go...new tab, open in most recent tab, or save to file. 2) How long do you typically use Firefox for without closing it down? all my internet connection. 3) How many instances of Firefox do you run at a time? just the one! Why have more when you have tabbed browsing? I have even got my popups/links to open in a new tab! Another tab extension! 4) How many tabs do you typically use (how many pages do you view) at a time? Depends, can be anything from 2 to 30. I always have the tab bar open even when there is only 1 tab. 5) How many plugins have you installed? All of them. Hope that helps, any other issues feel free to ask!
