Black History Month: Larry May

I absolutely loved Larry May.

Gutted when he left in 1983.

That goal away at Orient alone is enough to give him legend status.

One of the best days ever as a young Leicester fan. Absolute thousands there, breaking the cross bar and getting souvenirs from the players in terms of shirt, shorts and socks

I was there at Grimsby in Feb 1983 when he got sent off.

Gordon Milne switched Kevin MacDonald to centre-half and we didn't lose again that season, and got promoted (in June, after the inquiry into the Derby-Fulham game).

I don't think Larry played for us again.

That Orient game was my first ever away day, I’ll never forget that goal, the hot dog stall disappearing over the back of the stand and a couple of dozen foxes on the goal posts.

Being a black footballer at that time was a very tough gig and you shouldn’t underestimate how much players like Larry did to change attitudes.
