Louise Posted 16 October 2004 Posted 16 October 2004 I'M HAPPY AT LUTON - NEWELL BY JON DALE 10:30 - 16 October 2004  Mike Newell has stressed he is happy at Luton after the latest speculation linking him with Leicester City. The former Leicester striker immediately emerged as one of the bookmakers' front-runners for the manager's job following Micky Adams' resignation on Monday. But Newell said: "When a job becomes available, people look for the next person and the fact that, just like at Blackburn, I was an ex-player at Leicester and that things are going so well here, people put two and two together and get five or six. "I'm happy in my job here and will continue to do it." Newell is considering an offer from Luton to extend his contract which runs out next summer. He said: "The situation hasn't changed. I've been offered a new contract and I don't see there being a problem with it. "I've just given it to my solicitor to look over and it's not that I don't trust anyone here, but I've had bad experiences with contracts in the past and I want to make sure that doesn't happen again. "I trust everybody here, but it's just a legal thing where I want to know where I stand should the people in charge ever change." City legend Steve Walsh, meanwhile, says he is "flattered" to have been linked with the vacant job although he is a long-odds outsider in the betting. The 39-year-old, who made 449 appearances for City, now runs an internet business selling golfing holiday packages in the south of Spain. But Walsh was this week touted by as a possible replacement for Adams. He said: "It is always flattering to be linked with a club that you hold so close to your heart. It is nice to have had my name mentioned over the last week but I don't really think I have the qualifications for the job. "But I could make someone a good No.2 - everyone knows that they will always get 110 per cent out of me." Walsh has no immediate plans to return to this country on a full-time basis and has not applied for the post. But he believes he would be foolish not to consider his options if he was approached. "It would be the only job I would come back for and I would seriously have to think about it,'' he said. "Leicester are still a big part of my life. But there is no real point on commenting on pure speculation." http://www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk/disp...tentPK=11124842 Newell could probably be tempted away with more money but it doesn't look likely we'd get him any other way. And we don't have much money to give. What do people think to Walsh as No. 2?

Yes he was Mr Leicester City when he pulled on the shirt but i'm not sure he's held in that high regard by anyone other than the fans. Personally, I'd like him to stay away and remain a legend. If things go wrong for him, the memories will not be so good.

Ash Posted 17 October 2004 Posted 17 October 2004 I wouldnt mind Walsh as no.2 , would bring alot of passion to the team
Hoof Fox Posted 17 October 2004 Posted 17 October 2004 I agree that we need a management team that can instill passion into the team and get the supporters behind them and Walshy would be ideal, but IMO that would be where his qualities end. Under MON we had passion and commitment but also somebody who was a good Man manager, excellent tactician and tremendous ambassador for the club on and off the field. I am afraid that whilst Walshy is Leicester through and through, I would be greatly concerned to see him back in any form of management position. We need a proven management team that can come in and take the club to the next level and also start to build some long term foundations. We are in a decent position of being only a few points off the play off positions with arguably the strongest squad in the division, excellent facilities and the opportunity of playing in front of capacity crowds if we get the performances right. We have some excellent young prospects at the club, so there is the opportunity of building a side for the next 5 - 10 years if given the opportunity. What we can ill afford to do is carried away on a emotional rollercoaster dreaming of former players coming back to rediscover past glory days, especially as the ones touted have little experience and very little in the way of proven track records.

That's why I'm against the idea of Newell - With him being an ex Leicester player and having a good start to the season, fans just assume he's the best man for the job. Newell nearly destroyed Hartlepool's hopes of promotion a few seasons ago when he took over the team from Chris Turner. They were top by quite a few points with lot of the season gone - In the end they nearly blew it as they finished 3rd. He did a good job with Luton last season, and has had a excellent start this term, but that is no track record to suggest he's the man for the job.
