Guest Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 The c word is terrible but only because it makes me cringe. I may however have directed it towards certain people when pushed far enough.
crazy horse Posted 4 July 2006 Posted 4 July 2006 how did the 'C' word come about? does ne1 know? its supposed to come from a notorious london street called gropec*nt lane
Daggers Posted 4 July 2006 Author Posted 4 July 2006 how did the 'C' word come about? does ne1 know? Etymology - Wikipedia **** is an old Germanic word, and appeared as ****e in Middle English and kunta in Old Norse. It has cognates in most Germanic languages, such as the Swedish and Old Norwegian kunta, Frisian kunte, and Dutch kut, German "kott.. While kont in Dutch means bum (buttocks), the Dutch word for '****', the earlier mentioned 'kut', is considered to be considerably less offensive in the Dutch speaking areas than **** is in the English speaking world. Interestingly, the Afrikaans word 'kont' is equivalent to the English '****' and is even more offensive to Afrikaans-speakers than '****' is for English-speakers. It goes back to an Old Germanic stem kunton. It is clearly related to the Englsh word "cut," referring to a sliced-open area of any kind. Its original derivation however is disputed. It may have arisen by Grimm's law operating on the Proto-Indo-European root gen/gon = "create, become" seen in gonads, genital, gamete, genetics, gene, or the Proto-Indo-European root gwneH2/guneH2 = "woman" seen in gynaecology. Relationships to similar-sounding words such as the Latin cunnus (vulva), and its derivatives French con, and Spanish coño have not been conclusively demonstrated. Other Latin words related to cunnus: cuneatus, wedge-shaped; cuneo v. fasten with a wedge; (figurative) to wedge in, squeeze in, leading to English words like cuneiform(wedge-shaped)." ----------------------------------------------------------- I asked because American friends of mine really spit the dummy if I trot the word out to describe someone. Me? I don't find it that offensive. Children starving I find offensive. Someone saying c**t? No, not unless it is front of children. Or worse, dieing children.
