I often wonder how much of WinXP is 'all original'

I mean, I've just formatted my old laptop. It was running way way too slow, it was in desperate need of refreshing (a bit like a football team under Micky Adams - needs some new legs).

Anyways, I have WinXP SP1 on disk, as shipped with the machine 3 years or more ago. I installed it and decided to get SP2 out the way before I did anything else with the machine. So I went to Windows update. Of course, you can't actually update Windows until you've updated Windows Update. :P

So I update WU, then reboot, then update some bit-downloading-service and reboot again. Well I finally get WinXP to run and it wanted a ridiculous number of updates doing - without any mention of SP2.

Sod that, I'm not going thru 20 reboots without even having done SP2. So I went in search of the 'full version' SP2 patch - the one designed for IT professionals and network admins who have to patch many computers at the same time. It's a big patch - 266MB, but I'd rather deal with all pre-SP2 updates in one go (ie. with the full SP2 patch) than sit around like an idiot pressing 'reboot now' and going thru the entire cycle many times.

Anyways, SP2 downloaded in no time (less than 6 and a half minutes for 266MB, not bad going!) and was soon installed. Well, I'm well aware that Windows XP has more holes than a chunk of swiss cheese the size of Belgium, so went along to Window Update to get myself locked-and-loaded with the latest patches.

55 of the friggin' things... since SP2... and these are just the 'critical' patches.

Fifty-Five I ask?! Christ.

Anyways, since there's been about 280 'critical' security patches since Windows XP was released all those years ago, I've gotten to wondering if any of the operating system I use today is 'original' or wether it's secretly been completely rebuilt before my very eyes. With the amount of patching going on, I'm surprised half the applications people use haven't failed as the operating system itself has morphed into something completely different!

Can't wait for Vista... should be interesting to see if it's secure from the off. :P:sweating::thumbup:

Yes, some of the patches patch earlier patches and so on... difficult to keep track.

Some of the patches are copyright ones :whistle:

There is no such thing! :P

Thanks for urinating on my proverbial parade. :(

We can live in hope, though. :sweating:

Christ. Less than half an hour after I thought I was finished with the criticals, it's prompting me to reboot after yet another critical update!

:doh::frusty::mellow:

So annoying... I have stopped updating altogether hehe

If the warnings that accompany these patches are anything to go by, you're going to die a horrible death, very soon. :)

Nah, my PC is not connected directly to the internet.

My brother is personally looking after my internet gateway computer.

Plus I have 3 different spyware neutralisers on my PC :P

When I create the preloads for new computers (That's my job) - Starting from a base install of XP Service Pack 2B - I still have to install over 150 patches and updates

It's a way of life sadly

What you talking about?

If there's no such thing as Vista I've wasted a hell of a lot of time beta testing an imaginary OS

Still the trips to Germany (Munich) and France (Nice) for Vista training were fun - Just don't tell my boss that I didn't really need to go

PS: Vista is very different to XP

Updates are an arse, but if those feckers that create worms virus's etc would stop, I wouldn't have to patch so much!!!!

But in saying that, keep up the good work gates, your crappy software keeps the likes of me in a job!!!!

No doubt... but will it be any BETTER?

That is the main point...

(although undoubtedly it is difficult to imagine anything worse than current Windows versions :P )

Windows 98SE and Windows ME are by far the worst operating systems they produced. Not surprising as they were basically the same, ME just had styling cues drawn from Win2k (a far better OS).

If I had a computer with 98SE or ME installed, I'd go out and buy myself a copy of NT4 instead - and thats older than both 98/ME!
