lookwhaticando Posted 15 September 2006 Posted 15 September 2006 Bad night last night in the kitchen. Blimey. So upon the successful completion of a delightful feast of fajitas, it was time to put the kitchen back in order. My dad was putting onions back into the cupboard above the fridge/freezer, but he decided to rearrange a little. He pulled a bag of (unopened) potatoes from the cupboard and onto the top of the fridge/freezer. At this point he said "what the...?" I looked over, and couldn't quite see what he'd done... but he quickly adds "I only bought these at the weekend, and they've gone f/cking bad already!" At this point I noticed the bag was full of liquid, and it rapidly proceeded to leak thru the holes in the bag of spuds. It left a lovely little puddle on top of the fridge/freezer. Soon afterwards, my dad says "quick, get two bags to put this in". I'm rapidly becoming aware that what we're dealing with can only be described as a bag of potatoes which the farmers had forgotten to scrape the soil and horse manure off. The smell was absolutely hideous. The most pungent of smells imaginable, and it was quickly diffusing into the surrounding enviroment - so we opened all the windows and quickly attempted to dispose of this manky bag of spuds. I raced to the rubbish chute and dropped it down - luckily, with it being a 2KG back of spuds, it didn't hang around and soon found its way to the bins 10 stories down. It really was an appalling smell - imagine you'd just discovered a 2KG bag of hores shit in your cupboard. The smell didn't go away too quickly either. We quickly sprayed the top of the fridge/freezer with a strong orange-smelling cleaning agent, and wiped up the mess as quickly as possible (leading to the disposal of a second bag of waste in quick succession). Needless to say, the windows remained open thru the night. Seems the smell has gone away - hopefully it has, there's always a risk that the smell is lingering and not yet fully dissipated, and you've become immune to the smell until you come back after spending time away from the flat. Here's to hoping I don't get a nose full of disgusting horse shite when I come home at half four this evening.
cisono Posted 15 September 2006 Posted 15 September 2006 I left a pot on the fire for over one hour this afternoon. When I returned downstairs, I came back to find lots of smoke in the kitchen and adjoining room. Luckily, I didn't burn the house down I guess the smoke alarm needs new batteries

The People's Hero Posted 15 September 2006 Posted 15 September 2006 You're just making excuses so you can get close to me! Insatiable! Hope you're not expecting us to both fit in that sleeping bag!

lookwhaticando Posted 15 September 2006 Author Posted 15 September 2006 You'll all be pleased to know the flat on the whole doesn't whiff at all tonight. Unfortunately, the awful pong is lingering around the area of the seepage - but it's not a strong enough smell to make one wretch as it did last night. One has to be real close to the area and inhale vast volumes of air through one's nose before the stench is obvious, thankfully. Another quick cleanup attempt has masked the smell at least, for now, and hopefully will lessen it's enviromental impact in days to come.
